I'm not Uli, and I'm sure he'll chime in here with a much more in-depth response, but I believe how it works is that while Color will access the r3d files, it doesn't do a full high-quality debayer the way that other programs do. Color will only do half-high. This is what Uli means by half the resolution. (Correct me if I'm wrong here)

Depending on what your plans are for the final product, you may or may not see enough of a difference in quality to justify the extra time it takes for a full high-quality debayer. There are people around that finish using Color and are more than happy with the results, and I'm sure there are others that would never even think about going with just a half-high debayer. Only testing will show you what will work for your workflow.
