Need help with the BASICS on RED workflow
by Ann Husaini on Jun 17, 2009 at 7:05:52 pm

Hi all,

I am assisting on a feature and the RED is totally new to me and everyone in the company. Right now I am very concerned about setting up the project successfully for our eventual output path.

We are shooting 23.975 FPS anamorphic and using RED RUSHES to transcode the 4K files the RED creates to half-resolution (2K) ProRes422HQ quicktimes. (We are considering using quarter-resolution (1K) quicktimes but are unsure right now.) Files are shot with anamorphic squeeze and we unsqueeze them in RED RUSHES. Then we import files into FCP. The plan is to cut with these lower-resolution quicktimes and then match back to the 4K footage. That file will be sent to telecine and spat out to HD tape; will also make a DI and 35mm print from it eventually.

Sound is recorded as 8channel 48K 23.975 TC WAVs with embedded metadata from the sound recordist describing what lav is on what channel; have not worked with the files yet and have no idea if that metadata is going to import into FCP or we're just going to have to figure it out after import.

I have numerous questions about the process. Might be easier to not list here and ask any available folks on the forum who have done this workflow if they have a little availability for questions and harrassment over the phone or with long winded emails.

Thanks so much
Ann
