The Quicktime reference movies point directly to the original 12bit R3D data. If the host app asks for an 8bit decode, it will give it to them. If it asks for the r4fl pixel type (32 float YCbCr) it will give it to it in that format. r4fl is what FCP uses for 10bit codecs.
