no conversions of proxy files are only 8bit.

"Or does it fake it like Quicktime does in other types of conversions?"
you are catching on....

Now for true 10bit conversions use

REDLINE @ 1/2 debayer to a scaled 2K or 1080 as ProRes/DNXHD/ UC / DPX to keep and maintain the 10bit color space.
