Adjust track does not need a new reference. You can create one there, but it is not necessary.
Try this:
select your surface and position the 4 corners the way you want them.
go to adjust track tab. Select one of the corners and then "add master frame for all".
Next, with one corner selected, scroll through the time line. When you see drift, either hit the auto button OR nudge your corner. I advise adding a keyframe for each of the four corners everytime you adjust.
This will interpolate the keyframes to remove any drift.
Adding a new ref is more used if you need to create an offset relationship OR you need to verify a track when it is obscurred and need a relative offset ref.
