Has the camera ever worked under Vista?

Does the camera get recognised under another computer running XP or Windows 7?

Does he/you have another camera that does get recognised in Vista?

Have you tried another cable? Try using a 4 pin to 4 pin if possible.

Have you tried another firewire card?

If was using a 6 pin to 4 pin firewire connector and he has not been using a DV line protector, consider the firewire board in the camera toast, caused by hot swapping the camera. This is a known issue which a Google search will turn up for Sony cameras.
