VP10 in a coma after working hard (?)

I've got a 15-minute 1280x720 project, and everything's fine, but I'm running into problems when I switch to something else. For example, just closing Vegas takes about ten to fifteen seconds, then if I click on Windows Explorer it kinda sits there and has to build itself. Then, if I re-open Vegas it hangs immediately.
My only workaround at this point is rebooting or logging off and back on. Is there some RAM setting or something that I might have set wrong?
