Previewing an image sequence can be pretty heavy work depending on the source image sizes, so rendering them out to a video makes sense for smooth editing - use an intermediate format or low compression (high bitrate) to maintain quality.

If you need to do any pan/crop or major colour/exposure etc adjustments to the image sequence, do them before rendering to get the best quality output.
