Open two instances of Vegas. In one, open the old project, in the other, open the new project.
Select the clips you desire in the old project, copy them (singular or as a group) and paste them into the other instance of Vegas.

FWIW, avi is NOT a lossless format unless you use an uncompressed codec. Even this isn't necessarily lossless as some chroma subsampling does occur.
avi is merely a container, like a brown paper bag. you can put a lot of various groceries (aka "codecs") in that paper bag.
