Do you mean by dissappear that the wave form displayed on the timeline dissappears or that your audio cuts out and then is audible again?
If you are opening another program or moving Vegas to the background, you will find that your media will be offline. It does this so as to not tie up your system when you are obviously trying to do something else. If this is what it is doing, it is normal.
Sometimes if you have a lot of system resources being used for other processes (items in your system tray) and your RAM is being fully utlized, you will find that the audio skips (as does your video frame rates) and then it tries to sync back up. Sometimes it takes just a little while to do this. Try turning off your background programs and turning off your virus protection while video editing.
