By leaving it on (and assuming you are used to having it off) it can cause one of those head scratching moments where you go "huh?". Also, sometimes you don't always want everything to shift when you drag something to the timeline. I think it is just a word of caution so that 10 minutes into editing he won't look back at the timeline and see things all out of place due to him leaving ripple on.
