IMac for Vegas? PC?

I am about to upgrade to a more powerful computer so I can edit HDV in Vegas 8. Does anyone have a happy experience doing that with a new iMac and Boot Camp? If so, what configuration do you recommend?
Equally, if I stay in PC land, what minimum configuration would you recommend in order to edit HDV in "good" mode? I suspect that for around $1,200-$1,500 I can get a good PC that rivals the $2,500 iMac -- assuming I need one that powerful.
