Transparent

I have a client's logo in PhotoShop; background is transparent; letters are black. I save it in PSD (photoshop) format/maximum compatibility, and import into Vegas. But when I put it on the timeline, the background is white. I have tried changing the alpha properties to every possible choice, but nothing makes the white base go away. In PhotoShop, the background is definitely transparent (checkerboard pattern, plus I checked by adding a layer, and marking up the bottom layer; the marks show unless I switch off the bottom layer.)
So obviously I am missing some simple answer. Thanks for your hlep!
