Street Fighter style!

Hi everyone, I'm currently putting together a little street fighter style 'health bar' in my video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNNU887A-8g), with only one health bar however.
I've been trying to find a way to have a health bar which decreases at certain parts of the video, my current 'solution' is to have two coloured rectangles (one red and one yellow) made from Photoshop and have the yellow over the read. At a particular keyframe I try and use the pan/crop feature to shorten the yellow bar, however this just sends the bar flying all over the place and it's a tough cookie to crack.
It'd be great if someone could suggest an alternate solution which would work a lot better for me.
Thank you in advance.
