Sound Forge question

Can anyone tell me why the Pencil tool quits working in Sound Forge? It will be working, then gray's out. It has happened twice and I cannot figure out why. I went into preferences, cannot figure out anything I need to do.

I've been through the Help menu and whoever wrote the keyword indexes and I did not come from the same planet. (I'm not saying where I came from.)

I can't figure out another place to ask this.
