From your post it is not quite clear (to me) whether you have found the special script that will allow you to export an image sequence from the timeline.
In V6 (and probably v5 as well) you simply have to run the script "Tools>Scripting>Render Image Sequence".
Sure... this script will only output JPG or PNG... but I've never found that to be a problem when bringing them into another animation program.
