[Ron Thompson]
"They should have known all of us loyal Apple owners, all 6 million of us, would be updating at the same time!"
From what the guy at the Apple Store told us on Friday morning when the whole debacle was unfolding, it wasn't Apple's servers that were the problem. Apple had its side covered. Unfortunately, part of the process drew on AT&T's servers and they were crashed due to the amount of traffic being thrown at them. How true is this? I don't know but they got both Kathlyn and me through just fine on activation and we walked out of the store with our new 3Gs in working order. I asked the guy how he did it and he told me that they were using the Apple servers and when it came to the AT&T portion he was accessing the private servers that AT&T had set aside for the Apple Store activations.
I guess the moral of the story is: Apple knew they'd get deluged and were ready for it; AT&T, on the other hand, weren't ready as they have probably never had so many people all want to get on their system all at once -- after all, it's AT&T and there's no love lost between them and their customers.
Best regards,
Ron Lindeboom
