Try using the numeric keypad '0' to start and stop a RAM Preview (or scrub the timeline if you just need a piece of it). RAM Previews should respect the workarea.
Spec Preview simply fills and keeps topping up the preview frames - the playback is After Effect's responsibility. Sometimes there are frames that aren't filled in (such as blank frames) but the preview quickly figures those out.
The spacebar starts a standard preview which will use disk caching if it runs out of memory (this disk cache is AE's and independent of the Nucleo cache).
A RAM Preview keeps everything in memory (which if the preview is too large means part of the green bar will disappear or move about as the preview plays back).
Remember the RAM Preview is controlled by the settings in the Time Controls panel in AE. Nucleo will observe preview settings based on the chosen item in the "Fast Preview Options" setting in the Nucleo menu. See the PDF User Guide (in the Nucleo plugin folder) for details.
