jagged video and video card

I'm a newbie Particle Illusion 3.0 user
My brand new video card is an:
ATI Technologies Inc.
ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro AGP
Version: 2.0.6845 Release.
I checked and I have the most current drivers offered for this card.
My PC is a HP Pavilion a250n, P4, 2.6 GHZ.
I am an experienced Photoshop and Pinnacle Studio 11 user.
My problem .. When I load an AVI or WMV as a background it runs very slowly. I load a small file and it does the same. If I add emitters to layer zero (no background) it runs fine even with multiple emitters. My problems only occur when a background image is loaded.
I have preferences set as follows:
General tab -- no changes
OpenGL tab -- Use hardware acceleration is checked and nothing else.
I'm wondering if my video card is compatible for Particle Illusion 3.0 or do you have any other suggestions?
Thanks for any help
