Re: Problem with new RAID card?
by Andrew Cooper on Aug 6, 2008 at 8:31:04 pm

Another long night (5am this time) but everything now seems to be working. According to the tech support guy, it won't boot with a partition >2TB, which is surprising as one of the advertised benefits of the card is its support for >2TB arrays in Windows. I had assumed it would also work in OSX.

I got it working by creating a single RAID 5 array with two slices, with the boot partition at 300Gb. It now boots fine and the performance is excellent (270Mb/s read and write).

There is another small point - RAID Shield connects to the card using the IP address of the host machine. Whilst this probably works fine with external RAID controllers, it makes little sense for the PCIe card. If you are on a DHCP network, you may get a different IP address every time you boot. The way RAID Shield currently works, if your IP has changed, it will not see the controller at all unless you first remove the previous IP, then rescan and add the controller again. Not a major issue, but it is a bit cumbersome.
