Re: Cal Digit SAN possible right now !

Bob,

Thanks for your input here. I would imagine that CalDigit is watching this very carefully. I have spoken with them several times in the past week about setting up a SAN based on their hardware. As I said before, I am at a small university and I run a very small edit facility (2 FCP suites) but we need shared storage on a small scale.

Here is what I have been thinking about. I have no where near the experience that you and others on this forum have, so I simply put this here as a matter for discussion.

My edit suites consist of 1 MacPro and 1 G5.

I would connect the SAN like this:

HDPro connected to CalDigit ePCIe switch, switch connected to HBA's in both computers, PCIe in the MacPro and PCI-x in the G5.

Macs are connected via crossover cable or inexpensive gig-e switch.

Running Tiger's MetaSAN software to operate the SAN. MacPro would serve as Primary Metadata master with the G5 as the failover.

This way the edit stations take advantage of the full bandwidth of the HDPro, only sharing metadata over the gig-e connection.

If I have done my math right, and that is a big if, this is only about $1000 more than the MetaLAN solution and I believe that it would support uncompressedHD.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
K
