Sleeping HD okay?

I've seen the discussions here and elsewhere about how it is better for HD's to stay powered up. What about sleeping them?
I'm about to take delivery on a CalDigit HDOne, and the only thing that bothers me is the "green" issue: I'd rather not waste energy running all eight drives constantly, but I don't want to wear out drives either by turning them off and on overmuch.
So is letting them "sleep" the best of both worlds, or the worst of both worlds: bad for the HD's longevity, and still wasting energy?
