color only accepts ethernet for control surfaces at the moment. so low cost usb is not an option (for now). we have the jl cooper eclipse and it does what it needs to do very well. there's something about being to adjust contrast between mids and highs, or blacks and mids at the same time that gives you real feel for the picture. and the speed of two hands vs one.
that being said if you get into some real curve adjustment nightmare (like I'm doing now) the mouse and keyboard is the tool.
having both is really ideal, and yes it is a cost that seems excessive (even just for $6k for the eclipse). but the panels can really set you free and you can just blow through programs that just need primaries.
plus they really look cool on the desk and impress clients... not a bad thing when you are using finalcut studio to compete against the more accepted finishing systems.
