Its actually a simple solution! After the same headaches your friends had. We solved this by creating a LUT that offsets the gamma shift from Color back to FCP. You grade with the LUT enabled, disable for rendering. So when you send to Color, the gamma shift happens, yet your footage looks as it did during grading.
