You need to add a LOT of points to the curves. When I'm working with those curves, I'll start with the three basic points to form essentially the "bell jar."
Then once you have that basic shape, you start adding more points to limit that curve and change the shape of it. I've had as many as 20 or 30 points in a very small space on a curve to ensure that I only affect the areas I want to affect.
It's a bit of a pain to work with at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's not bad.
I absolutely love the curves and use them often.
