Okay, I created a "Final" sequence and put all the elements that wouldn't be making the trip to Color. Next, I collapsed the clips needing grading to V1 track and sent that to Color. After color grade and render, took the "from Color" sequence and nested it in the "Final" sequence. Round-trip successful.
Thanks for the tip on non-friendly elements -- that certainly wasn't in the manual. I checked the frame rate of the project with this workflow, and it was correct (29.97). None of the non-friendlies were in 23.98, so Color must've really disliked them.
Thanks again!
