What's wrong with Proress/Color?
by Rafael Amador on May 1, 2008 at 11:41:15 am

Yesterday after reading a thread (http://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/223/5925, I made a little test to check the accuracy of the Color's Vectorscope.
I couldn't find noting against the Vectorscope, but what I found about Proress HQ really shocked me.
The simplest test on the World. I just exported from FC the same Color Bars in Prores HQ and in AJA 10bRGB (SMPTE) and bring them together to Color.
The AJA bars were almost prefect in the Color's Waveform (Y). The Luma stair of the Proress bars was not such stair. All the values were shifted a lot and the Luma of the Red bar was quite on top of the Green bar. Only the White and the Black kept in place. The rest a mess. In the Vectorscope big differences in saturation and even phase. So, frightening.
Were is the problem? It seems that FC makes a god job going from YCbCr to RGB. But I think Color don't makes so well the same conversion. I made a test with Animation and the bars (0-255) were OK in Colors.
Is a Color issue? or a Proress issue?
I have to find out if Color is changing my footage the same way. If so, there is something else to be fixed.

Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1
G5 2x2Gh 4GbRAM-BlackMagic Extreme
PMBP 17"Core2Duo 4GbRAM-AJA ioHD
JVC DTV-17"
SONY EX-1 . SONY PD170
..and always a big mess on top of the table.
