Designing A Look

Hello,
I am a fairly advanced color user with a big question. How do you use the three way color corrector in Color without adjusting the luminance of the picture. I have a free version of Digital Fusion. All I do to start grading is apply the CC node. I then switch to the highlights of the the shot and adjust it to whatever color I want. The same for the shadows, and mids. When I do this it leaves the luminance channel alone. Now in Color it doesn't seem to do that. For the Primary Out tab I always get an elevation in the luminance channel while I shift the chorma shadows, mids, highlights. I down want to always use the RGB curves for getting stylized looks. Is their a way to preserve luma like in AE, or am I just seeing things.
