Re: Calibrating HDSDI DLP projector

The real problem here is that you will require a 3D LUT to profile the DLP display, and there are so many incompatible flavours out there you pretty much need one tailored for your particular hardware/software mix.

I have the same challenge, in that I've got a DLP hanging off the 2nd HDSDI output of my Kona3. Kona only supports 1-D "User Profiles", and I have no idea what they're basing their pre-built "Cinema table" on. 1-D is pretty much a 'gamma-only' translation, but what you need is something that covers the gamut. It would be great if one could somehow split the LUT-feed so that different renditions could be displayed with respect to the target monitor type, as I do run an e-Cinema DCM23 off the A output. What i"m asking for is,"straight" out the A, and LUT'd out the B... If you can down-res and letterbox for different video types.... why not?

There is a "by-eye" procedure for generating a 3D LUT under COLOR, but it is for all practical purposes restricted for use internally to COLOR, even though it is claimed to be compatible with other LUT modifying display devices. I haven't found this to be the case. Tried exporting the COLOR LUT but my film-out colleagues found it unreadable and even after text-file manipulation was just a garbled mess. Tried Speedgrade, Photoshop, the Panavision Display Processor software, you name it. Forget about trying to translate a 3D LUT into 1-D, unless! Try tracking down Steve Shaw at Digital Praxis...
Shake has a Truelight node that is great for an internal profile, as well... but hardly exportable, either.

If you're serious, you will go the Baselight/Truelight path. Somewhat expensive, but.... arguably the industry standard. I'm assuming this is for cinema/filmout grading, and nobody is going to bet their $50-75K (per print) DI budget on "we think it will be okay...."
