Re: Can you color correct 'nests'

[JamesR] "Anyway, once exported and then re-imported, the edits are all different when dealing with dissolves as i guess the 'unseen' source material isnt there to be used. What that then meant was i had to shorten each nest which was a pain as it was perfect before."

Ok, when you have a Dissolve you have to lengthen the video to allow for the handles before exporting.

Hold down the Option key and highlight the video clips you're about to nest. By holding down the option, you don't select the audio tracks, which you don't need.

Now move the video up one track, or however many video tracks you need to move up to get them into clear tracks.

Now add handles to the front and back of each clip to be nested by simply Option Click and dragging at the head and tail of each clip. Again, Option allows you to stretch out the video without affecting the audio. I generally add at least 1 second to each end.

Now Option Select all the video tracks again and Nest.

Now you will have a Nest sitting above your main video with a hole for it to go into.

Export that Nest as a Self Contained Movie (so you can go into Color)

Import that clip and Replace the Nest in the timeline.

Trim the Clip so it fits into the hole and move it down into the hole.

Add your transitions.

This sounds very convoluted, but after you do this a few times, it becomes second nature. When you create a Nest you ONLY have access to the video within the nest, all that extra video is gone.

This procedure allows you to go ahead and use Nests and still be able to export out to Color for grading.
