you are not doing anything wrong. This is a bug and something I also wish they would look into. After color correcting 300 shots on one reel and rendering to play back in FCP the DP will often want to make tweeks. So when you go back to Color and change say 60 shots, it is hard to remember the ones that were changed so that you can just add them to the Que. If the render bar changed color then you could just see what shots you changed and select those, but it never works right. And if after you re colored a shot and send just one shot at a time to the Que it will cause Color to crash. I have found that sending all the shot you want to render to the Que one time is best. Sending a shot here and a shot there between corrections will usually lead to a crash.
