I completely agree with you. Native RED in color, there is no comparison. Which is why it frustrates me greatly to have to consider pro res transcoded workflows on jobs that I know will require a lot of keying. Curves are very powerful, but can only get you so far (which leads to another color complaint, not being able to limit curves to a vignette). I dream of a day when vignettes, custom shapes, and keys all live in the same place, all happily intersecting, adding and subtracting from each other.

I have found that manual white balance (in redalert etc) can make a substantial difference to your grading range in colour with pro res files. Pays to go through your footage and do a really quick best light before rendering to pro res, if you have the time.
