When you are working in client attended sessions it's somewhat annoying to have to go into the curves and play around. It's more exacting to grab the key, push the colors you know are selected and move on.

That said, do curves do the job? yes. Ideal? no

In terms of RED vs ProRes.. if you've already used the RAW data to do the primary grade then you are not going to need the rest of its range to do a little secondary tweak.

Converting an entire project to PR before grading is another story.
