It's really easy to change the time code in a Quicktime clip. In Final Cut, just pull down "Modify->Timecode." You can change the current frame, the first frame, add a time code track if there isn't any, and change the DF flag.
So no, I don't really see serious potential for disaster in using the Color EDL import method.
