dealing with gamma

I'm officially tired of having to explain to clients why a film graded on my 2.4 gamma reference monitor looks like crap when played back on DVD on their 1.8 gamma computer monitor. And explanations sound like excuses when I'm the first DVD they've had this problem with. How do big DVD authoring studios deal with this variation? Are people grading middle of the road? Or spitting out an alternate gamma pushed DVD version grade?
