problem during render of videoconference transition

I've set up my videoconference transition and enabled a gradient. I've changed the top color. Step through it a few frames at a time and it looks fine. Also during the render it looks fine. But pow - as soon as the render is done the entire BG goes to black - no gradient. Am I mising a step somewhere? PS I'm working in FCP. Don't know if the same happens in Motion. I've tried quitting FCP and restarting. Problem persists.
Dual 2.7 GHz G5, 4GB RAM, ATI Radeon 9650, Xserve RAID, AJA IO, 2 20" Cinema Display, FCP 5.1.2, OS X10.4.8
