You can also copy and paste from Illustrator if you have it.
Also, and this is a serious pain, and hard to explain in text, but it is possible to copy and paste the shape layers paths into other masks in AE. It can get pretty cumbersome, so if you have illustrator, convert your text to outlines and copy them into AE.
