I think the performance degradation might have something to do with the PNG compression. While is it lossless it isn't very fast on decompression. There is a huge amount of math QuickTime has to do play back your PNG files.
You might want to look at BitJazz's SheerVideo. They offer various bit depths of 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 lossless compression, but unlike PNG they are supposed to be real time. They offer both a PC and Mac version which is cool. I haven't used there codec for a while but I am planning to use their codec extensively once I get my new G5. Everyone I know that has used it has great things to say about it.
