We actually improved the stability considerably in two patches for CS4 (there was a third patch, but it was for a single bug involving the interaction of QuickTime Player or FCP with clips recorded by OL). Unfortunately, judging from the crash reports we continued receiving all the way through to the release of CS5, many customers did not apply the patch.
We made still more strides in CS5, so the current version is measurably more stable than 4.0.2. The most recent stats I saw showed that the rate of "abnormal terminations" is down by half. Guaranteed stability? No QE manager in his/her right mind would make that claim. But I assure you your experience with 5.0.1 will be much more to your liking than with 4.0. Download the trial and see for yourself.
