HD2 and laptop
by willisub on Feb 10, 2007 at 3:53:10 am

I'm thinking of purchasing DV Rack HD2 but am don't know if it will work on my laptop. (not willing to buy a new laptop).

Frustrated with Adobe as they don't allow a download test of the HD2 version, even though you can sign up to download it on their website. You even get a email with the download link and Adobe tech support will tell you the bad link will be fixed, so keep signing up and downloading it. They give you the SD version of 2.0, not the HD2 version.

More frustration on contacting a knowledgeable technician.

I have a 2.8 ghz P4 laptop. 15 inch monitor with 7200 rpm internal drive. I can capture and edit SD firewire DV files with the system.

I'm marginal with the Canon Console software on their system 30 second test. I drop an occasional frame and their preview does not update 100% at 30 frames per second. The drive test checks out ok, but the cpu test (which I think is being influenced by the graphics overlay in their program) fails(. This laptop doesn't have a dedicated graphics card. Intel with shared memory. I might need more ram, as I only have 500mb.

SD trial version of DV Rack runs great on the laptop.

My question is, assuming the worst, that this laptop might not keep up while monitoring and capturing,..... if I decide not to capture hdv to the hard drive, can I assume or hope that I can use the rest of the features of the software. I'm interested in using the preview monitor and checking the waveform/vetorscope, checking focus and using the zoom feature of the focus window. Audio levels would be looked at as well as a few other features. I hoping that everything will run, but not sure at this point.

The FAQ says each window uses CPU time, so if it can almost keep up while capturing, am I stupid thinking it should keep up when not capturing.

Heading for Hawaii with 15 tapes and a new Canon XH1A so I'll say thanks in advance for any advice.
