wont mount and a !!!!FOLDER icon flashes

I have one of the original 20 GB white ipods, not the one without the wheel but the first generation with the wheel. Anyway, it wont mount on the computer it flashes a folder icon with an exclamation !!!! mark on it. This of course is no good. Eventually it turns off but when I turn it back on it does the same thing, when I mount it, it clicks all day but will not mount.
Whatever is wrong with it - I figured the easiest solution was to reformat it, though it'd be nice if I could recover the songs first. I was wondering if there was a trusted program out there that maybe was even FREE that I could get this done with. Maybe even a program that is dedicated to just ipods.

The ipod was formated on a PC
