Well, personally I believe in knowing as much as you can about how it all works.
If you are the type of person who can write the XML by hand, then you may want to just do that. I write my feed by hand and that gives me a very good idea of where to troubleshoot if anything goes wrong.
Besides, the most "difficult" part is just creating the feed at the start. Once you have a valid iTunes-compatible feed then it is a very quick process to add a new episode. After I've written an episode's description, I can update the feed by hand to post the new episode in just a minute or two flat.
