Video podcasting standards

Hello all,
I after some clarification on file format standards for video podcasting. I've seen that three main file formats are used: mp4, m4v and mov. Are any of these becoming the de facto standard? I've seen mp4's used more widely than m4v's or mov's.
The reason I ask is because I can only get m4v files to play on my ipod using the Export to Ipod feature in Quicktime Pro. I currently use After Effects to create my videos and if I export them as mp4's, they won't play on my ipod. If I try and export an mp4 from After Effects using the H624 codec the movie will not play in Quicktime either - I get 'an invalid sample description was found in the movie'. Any ideas?
Many thanks.
