If I understand you well, then it is quit easy:
First add the FX you want to add to just a random (dummy) event (you will remove this effect afterwards) and copy the event.
Then select all the events you want the fx added to in the
project media tab
as you suggested. Now instead of adding an media fx, just right click and select SELECT TIMELINE EVENTS.
Then right click on one of the selected events on the timeline and select PASTE EVENT ATTRIBUTES. Now you just have to remove the fx from the dummy event and you are done.
