Transparent Images

Hello,

I'd like to know how I can preserve transparent images within a photoshop file, then import them into Illustrator without being gigantic (file size)

The only file that works that I know of is a psd (photoshop) file that has not been flattened.

any help from the COW would be much appreciated.
