Light positioning axis handles not available in pre-composed layers?

I have a nested composition. When I put lights in the main comp, they show up with the colored positioning handles for each axis, along with a pointer that shows the center of the light.
When I add a light within a nested composition, it doesn't show anything.
Why is that?
Sorry for my newbie question, please help me? :)
