I had tried a track matte but it wasn't working.
When you suggested track matte, I tried again and found I couldn't see the contents inside the shape layer because the gradient fill was low. Raised gradient fill to 100% and it worked great. :)

Auto trace is also a good solution. Of course there is much more control with the shape layer and track matte.
