Solved!- "Pending Media" Error, But there is no Logic here

Friends,

I was a victim of the "Pending Media" problem while importing MPEG-2 files. So, after all searching around I was about to give up 'coz nothing was working.

Then someone was suggesting to rename the *.mpg to *.avi. And lo!!! After Effects CS4 imports fine, voila!

What is the Technical reason here? I find it absurd.
