Thanks to you both for your thoughtful replies.

As per the subject line, the weird thing about this issue is that RAM preview is unaffected by just about any setting I try. Even in wireframe it's playing at most 7fps. This is once it's created the preview i.e I have a nice green line atop my timeline. Even weirder is that once it's generated a preview it'll play back at roughly the same speed it does when I select draft/quarter res settings and hit spacebar.

Just to be clear, I have two nested comps that I built in 1080 nested within my SD comp. They're not particularly complex, nor do they contain any 1080 vt. The two lights are only used in the first 8 seconds of the main comp, at which point they are switched off. Switching them off for the purpose of identifying the bottleneck yielded little conclusion.

There must be something I'm doing wrong here since the actual renders of my final files are coming out superspeed - in fact in half the time my quad core MugBug Pro has managed. It's far from my first AE project but it is the first on the T3400.

Thanks again!

Fab.
