Yeah, you can re-use the old comp as a nested comp in the new project. Just import the old project into the new one -- you can do that in AE.

But unless the old project's really small, I wouldn't do it...yet. First, I'd duplicate the old project, delete anything in it I didn't need, save it, and THEN I'd import the leaner and meaner old project into the new project. It cuts down on confusion that way.
